  15. <p>     DIED. Michael Powell, 84, pioneering British film director;
  16. in Avening, England. After an apprenticeship with Alfred
  17. Hitchcock, Powell launched a career of remarkable diversity and
  18. experimentation. He was best known for the 1948 ballet film The
  19. Red Shoes. He also crafted Black Narcissus (1947) about the
  20. fantasies of Anglican nuns in the Himalayas, the war epic 49th
  21. Parallel (1941) and Peeping Tom (1959), a portrait of a
  22. sadistic photographer.
