- <p> DIED. Michael Powell, 84, pioneering British film director;
- in Avening, England. After an apprenticeship with Alfred
- Hitchcock, Powell launched a career of remarkable diversity and
- experimentation. He was best known for the 1948 ballet film The
- Red Shoes. He also crafted Black Narcissus (1947) about the
- fantasies of Anglican nuns in the Himalayas, the war epic 49th
- Parallel (1941) and Peeping Tom (1959), a portrait of a
- sadistic photographer.
